Trans Healthcare: Taking technology to healthcare

The company has been a leading distributor of medical equipments, consumables and disposables for the past 14 years

Trans Health Care India Private Limited was established in 1994 as a distributor of medical equipments in Southern India. This Chennai based company slowly established itself in South, East and North Eastern India with a network of dealers and own sales force. Since its inception, the company has showed steady growth and development and has captured a prominent and formidable position amongst the highly rated companies in its territory.

Manufacturing

In 1999, it established its own manufacturing unit in Guindy, Chennai and started manufacturing monitors, pulse oximeters, infusions pumps, syringe pumps, incubators and baby warmers in collaboration with global manufacturers. It has tied up with companies like Choice, China, Samtronics, Brazil, NEK, Korea, Smiths Medical, USA and Respironics, USA for research and development. In addition to this, the company also runs its own R&D unit.

Product profile

Trans Healthcare has partnered with several international manufacturers to distribute their products in India. These include Arcomed AG Medical Systems, Viasys Healthcare, Vascon, Kodak, Sensor Medics, Trans Lumina, Nonin Medical, Inc, and so on. It also distributes anaesthesia equipments of Delhi based Allied Medical Services Pvt. Ltd across South India.

The company provides solutions at the leading edge of technology supplying high quality and user friendly equipment for specialties, such as anaesthesia, critical care, respiratory care, cardiology and radiology.

The company deals with all types of ventilators, anaesthsia equipments, vaporizer, interventional cardiac equipments, defibrillators, oxygen concentrators, and X Ray and imaging films.

Certifications

In 2004, the company was awarded with ISO 9000:2000 by TUV Rheinland. It is also in the process of obtaining ISO 13485: 2003. "We are also planning to apply for CE marking, which will boost our exports," says G Muthukrishnan, Managing Director. The company had already exported some electronic components for medical equipments to UK.

It has also applied to the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) for its products. "Though it has been made mandatory to obtain certification from CDSCO, there are no adequate testing centres to felicitate the testing process," says Muthukrishnan. However, he feels an Indian regulation is a must to ensure that quality medical products are used within India.

The company also has an in-house testing facility in order to ensure the safety and quality of the products manufactured by it.

Trans Healthcare has been supplying medical equipments and consumables to government and private institutions. "All the major corporate hospitals in South India are our clients," says Muthukrishnan and adds, "Our major clients include Apollo Enterprise, Wockhardt, Manipal Hospital in South India."

Challenges

Muthukrishnan feels refurbished equipment trade is a major threat in equipment trade. "There is no regulation is refurbished trade and any problem caused in refurbished equipment will damage the entire brand," he says. When a regulation is planned on medical equipments refurbished equipments should also be taken into account.

There is also problem in import duty of equipments and components. He terms it "a confusing system" and feels a uniform import duty for all medical equipments would be helpful.

As far as the future and growth of the company Muthukrishnan says, "We have had a steady growth all these years and the future of this industry is very bright."
