Sri Sathya Sai Baba Hospital, Bangalore

Some may call it as a temple of healing, some may call it a mother's lap but for every patient it is a home to cure ailment. Sri Sathya Sai Baba Institute of Medical Sciences began in 1956 with 12-bed facility and today it boasts of super-specialty Hospital, which covers total 333 beds with the 250 outpatients per day that caters to specialties of cardiac and neurosciences.

According to Dr AS Hegde, Chairman and Medical Director, Sri Sathya Sai Baba Hospital, Bangalore, the biggest achievement for the Hospital is that it has performed more than 1490 neurosurgeries, 1282 cardiac surgeries, and 4106 cardiac cath procedures in the last year, entirely free of cost.

Every organisation has to face the challenges and overcome them for better outcome in the future. According to Dr Hegde, the biggest challenge they face is the rising costs of healthcare personnel. "Especially, the salaries of doctors are coming up due to increasing number of corporate hospitals and this being a completely charitable Hospital, it is very difficult to match their expectations," says Dr Hegde.

New Technologies

Recently, the Hospital adopted a new mode of compression from Matrix View Private Limited to compress echo cardiogram videos, to make it available to cardiologist across the hospital network. Also, they are evaluating Viscope-a stethoscope with visual signal capabilities, from an Australian company.

"We are adopting full-fledged PACS system shortly and also upgrading our network shortly to 10 GBPS," says Dr Hegde. The Hospital has also upgraded the Hospital Information System (HIS) from Medicom HIS to IBA-eHIS with necessary upgrades to servers," he adds.

Patient Care

Rendering services free-of-cost does not imply that the Hospital compromises on patient care. They have set up quality control and patient audit departments, which give constant feedback on patient care outcomes. Also, there is a separate patient welfare officer who is in constant touch with patient and takes care of their needs.
