quality education and path-breaking medical services at affordable prices, which
is ably supported by high-end technologies. Manipal Hospital, Bangalore, a flagship

patients quality healthcare, since its inception in the year 1991. Today, it

According to R Basil, Managing Director and CEO, Manipal Health
Systems, getting rated as a best recommended super-speciality Hospital in India
by an independent organisation called Voluntary Organisation in the Interest
of Consumer Education (VOICE) is the most significant achievement for Manipal
Hospital. "We take pride in putting the interest of the patient above anything
else and this was a reaffirmation from a neutral body," Basil says.
USP
Manipal Hospital's USP has always been 'care with a personal
touch' and unyielding 'ethical practices.' "A detailed list of patient's
rights is provided to the people who visit our Hospital. We also ensure that
every staff of the Hospital respects the rights. Our conscience is our auditor
when it comes to ethical practice," says Basil. "We also ensure that
the patient is kept informed of the cost of treatment in advance and also standardising
documents to minimise confusion and maximise satisfaction," adds Basil.
New Technologies
Manipal has installed flat panel cathlab in India and other advanced technologies
like twin gradient MRI (1.5 Tesla) and a 64-slice CT, which are among the recent
additions to their assets. Manipal Hospital also conducts bone marrow transplant
through a clinical collaboration with the University of Minnesota.
Quantum of Investment
"We have invested over $20 million for acquisition of latest equipment
in medical technologies and more than $50 million in recent years, in creating
and improving our infrastructure. We have also invested $5 million in our IT
primarily to set up a Hospital Information System, Electronic Patient Records,"
informs Basil. Manipal Hospital has also upgraded itself with Picture Archival
Communication System (PACS).
Improve Productivity and Output
Our OPD functions over 80 per cent, more than that of normal hospitals in terms
of availability to patients and have added over 30 super and sub-specialties
to their services. "However, we ensure that they do not affect patient
comfort and are ethical," Basil says.
CSR
Manipal Hospital offers free treatment to the patients at an adopted village
Jakkur near Bangalore every week. Nearly 1500 poor patients are provided free
beds and consultation for ailments per year. According to Basil, the Group has
set up Manipal Foundation to cater to the funding needs of the poor and it has
already spent around five crore to provide subsidised treatment to the poor
patients.
Expansion Plans
The Hospital plans to add super-specialty unit in interventional neuro-radiology.
"We have added six hospitals to our Group recently and these are set up
in Bangalore, Salem, Vijayawada, Vishakapatnam and Mangalore. We are also in
the process of finalisation of projects in New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata,"
Basil says.
