Hosmat Hospital, Bangalore
Hosmat Hospital started out as a 350 bedded Hospital in 1991
in the city of Bangalore and today has expanded itself up to 450 beds superspeciality
Hospital specialising in orthopaedics and joint replacement. The Hospital has
plans to increase its bed strength to 500 beds in the coming future making it
the largest speciality hospital of its kind in Asia.
Achievements in the Last Year
The
Hospital has added 100 beds last year making it a total of 450 beds, another
four operation theaters were recently added and now the total operation theaters
are 12. This makes Hosmat Hospital an exclusive orthopaedic Hospital in India.
According to Dr Thomas Chandy, Chairman and Managing Director, Hosmat Hospital,
Bangalore, over 5,500 surgeries were performed and 70,000 patients were seen
in the last year. Also, "we have carried out study of 1,000 knee replacement
surgeries. Last year, patients jumped to 50 per cent compared to the patients
in 2006-2007, especially for joint replacement of the knee, hip, shoulder and
surface replacement of the hip and high flexion knee," he says.

Located in the midst of Bangalore city with easy access to
patients, the Hospital is considered amongst the largest and best equipped orthopaedic
Hospital in India. According to Dr Chandy, "The Hospital today is a major
trauma center. It has two exclusive joint replacement operation theaters with
laminar air flow which gives it almost zero infection rate."
Fiscal Viability
"Hosmat owns the land and building, hence we do not incur any land cost
and regularly hold cost-cutting meetings where we give targets. Each department
has to balance its budget. All these measures with sustained growth give Hosmat
viability for future," says Dr Chandy.
CSR
Hosmat runs charitable trusts like Hosmat Poor Patients Foundation, Hosmat Accident
Foundation, Hosmat Handicapped Patients Foundation, and Arthritis Foundation
of India. "We regularly conduct rural awareness camps on osteoporosis in
nearby villages like Sira, Ajjanapura, Chamarajanagar," adds Dr Chandy.
Expansion Plans
Hosmat has tie-ups with 175 hospitals, which provide support, education and
visits by our consultants. "Hosmat is planning to expand to peripheral
centers and lease out five hospitals in the periphery of Bangalore which will
be in place in 2009," informs Dr Chandy. The Hospital is also starting
a training college for nursing.
