Sree Chitra Institute of Medical Sciences

Started as a tertiary-care centre for cardiovascular-thoracic and neurological diseases with an 80 bedded hospital in 1976, Sree Chitra Institute of Medical Sciences has expanded to its current bed-strength of 239. It receives around 500 OPD patients everyday.

Significant Achievements in the Last Year

The Hospital successfully increased throughput by 30 per cent, by optimising patient management strategies, reducing hospital stay and lowering mortality rate. A new management and research centre for sleep disorders and another for stroke have been established.

USP

It is a unique institution that focuses on R&D for supporting healthcare technology and patient care for the nation, thus bringing about a convergence medical sciences and healthcare technology.

Expansion Plans

"Our comprehensive plan is to help the Indian healthcare industry capture at least 50 per cent of the medical devices market"

Medical Sciences

The management plans to take several measures to refurbish the Hospital infrastructure, which is now more than 30 years old. "Because of severe space constraints in its present location, the Institute is planning to relocate the Hospital and build another one outside the city on a 50-100 acres plot," states Prof K Mohandas, Director (Vice Chancellor), Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology.

Biggest Challenges

One of the biggest challenges is space constraint which is why the management plans to relocate the entire Hospital and build one outside the city.

Adopting New Technologies

"Because this is an autonomous institution and therefore not hampered by government bureaucratic procedures, it is relatively easy for the Institute to acquire new technologies and equipment, as well as adopt fresh management strategies in patient-care and R&D. For example, the Institute has had several PPPs long before it became a 'mantra' for the Government," beams Mohandas.

Improve Productivity and Output

The main focus is currently R&D so as to develop indigenous technology. "Our 'Vision 2020' is a comprehensive plan that will help the Indian industry to capture at least 50 per cent of the medical devices market (currently less than 20 per cent)," informs Mohandas.

CSR

The Hospital's primary aim is to serve those who cannot afford advanced treatment in private hospitals. Moreover, adds Mohandas, "we also run two out reach centres in Kerala.
