Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences based (MIMS) in Calicut
was founded in 2001. In the last one year the Hospital has taken a quantum leap,
expanding from 350 to 600 beds. Over the years, it has grown as one of the leading,
high-tech, multi specialty hospitals with state-of-the-art tertiary care facilities
and has set benchmark in standards of healthcare. The Hospital receives around
725-750 OPD patients everyday
Significant Achievements in the Last Year
MIMS
has introduced an Accident and Trauma Insurance Scheme (MATIS-MIMS Accidents
and Trauma Insurance Scheme) in association with National Insurance Company.
This 600-bedded multi-specialty Hospital has also received the Kerala State
Pollution Control Board Award for the year 2008 for the effective control of
pollution and coveted as the 'best environment-friendly hospital.'
New Initiatives
The Hospital is planning to start satellite centers in nearby districts like
Malappuram and Wayanad. "Full-fledged oncology and IVF units are under
construction in MIMS premises. We have also initiated the medical research institute
by the MIMS academy," states Dr Abdulla Cheryakkat, Medical Director. The
Group is also having discussions with DM Healthcare Groups for merger and expansion
nationwide. MIMS has made MoU with all the leading TPAs in India and from Middle-East
to provide cashless treatment to health insurance holders.

MIMS has 12 fully equipped operation theatres and has facilities
for conducting the super specialty procedures like open heart surgeries, beating
heart surgeries, kidney transplantation, joint replacement surgeries, spine
surgeries, cochlear implant surgery, complex neurosurgeries. The department
of emergency and trauma care is supported by 24 hours diagnostics department
and a blood bank which has component separation facility. The Hospital has Electronic
Medical Record system (EMR), Management Information System (MIS), biogas plant,
biometric attendance system, tele-radiology, kiosks for registering birth and
death. The Hospital has invested around Rs 113 crore in the areas of Information
Technology, infrastructure and medical technologies.
Quality and Patient Friendliness
"Measurable quality objectives, clinical audits, process audits, time delay
studies, utilisation studies, patient flow dynamic study are done to evaluate
the effectiveness and efficiency of the services and outcome. Following which
corrective and preventive measures are implemented. MIMS believes that there
is no upper limit for quality, charity and affection," states Dr Cheryakkat.
"The quality assurance's telephone number is displayed in all prominent
places of the Hospital and in rooms and wards for the patients to contact us
personally to give their appreciation, suggestions, complaints or concerns.
It is a 24 hours accessible number. The concerns are adequately addressed,"
says Dr Cheryakkat. All suggestions/ complaints are analysed and presented to
the top management every week and necessary immediate actions are taken. For
example, the pharmacy delay was a constant complaint for three weeks. Immediately
an analysis was done and patient-centric peripheral counters were opened both
for inpatients and out-patients.
