Run by SR Trust, Madurai based Meenakshi Mission Hospital
and Research Centre (MMHRC) is a 600 bedded facility that started functioning
in 1990 with an aim to provide quality healthcare for all.
Significant Achievement in the Last Year
Dr
Ramesh Arthanari, Senior Consultant, Surgical Gastro Enterology Department performed
a key-hole surgery on a patient to remove a tumor weighing five kilograms. Dr
TR Murali, a renowned Urologist of the Hospital has completed 25 thousand urological
procedures. More than 2000 heart surgeries have been performed in the Hospital
in the past four years by Dr AR Raghuram, Senior Consultant, Cardio Thoracic
Surgeon.
New Initiatives
The Hospital has started to perform dialysis at patients' homes by the method
of Continuous Ambulatory Peritonial Dialysis (CAPD). The Hospital performs 'beating
heart surgery method without using heart-lung machine. The Hospital has
also been performing endoscopic harvesting of blood vessels for open heart surgery
since last year.

The oncology department of the Hospital has added brachytherapy
for cancer treatment, in addition to chemotherapy, oncologic surgery and radiation
oncology. MMHRC has procured equipment like Single Photon Emission Computed
Tomography (SPECT).

'Kid Aid Foundation' scheme is launched by the Hospital for
the benefit of school going children. 80 children will be undergoing free cardiac
surgery under this scheme. It intends to do three free heart surgeries for children
every month. The Hospital, in association with The Smile Train, USA has conducted
more than 3800 free Surgery for cleft lip and palate for children. Five
peripheral health centrers in Vellapatty, Sakkimangalam, Kadamalaikundu, Melur
in semi-urban Madurai, are maintained by MMHRC in collaboration with the village
improvement committee a committee comprising the village heads and Panchayat
members, says Dr S Gurushankar, Vice Chairman. Three CME programmes are
conducted by the Hospital every month. It has tied up with 60 corporate companies
and receives 8000 patients every year.
Patient Friendliness
The Hospital attracts patients from Srilanka, Dubai, UAE, Kenya and Maldives
through medical tourism. About 500 patients from abroad have been treated in
the last two years. The Hospital engages interpreters who assist the patient-doctor
interaction.
