K G Hospital, Coimbatore
From a 25 bedded Hospital in 1974 to a 550 bedded multi-specialty
Hospital, the K Govindaswamy Naidu Medical Trust run K G Hospital attracts about
350 patients in the OPD daily.
Significant Achievements in the Last One Year
Stem
cell transplantation was introduced in the Hospital this year. The Hospital
has performed two successful complicated stem cell transplantations - one on
a 70-year old lady with coronary artery disease and the other one on a 38-year
old lady who had sustained a spinal cord injury following a road traffic accident.
KG Hospital has entered into a tie-up with Japan based Nichi-in Centre for Regenerative
transplantation.
Biggest challenges
The rising cost of medicines and inflationary spiral have been affecting the
Hospital. "To help patients, we prescribe generic drugs which are quite
cheaper than branded ones," says Dr G Bakthavathsalam, Chairman. According
to him, Government regulations on waste management disposal, ever demanding
need of the community to provide healthcare at affordable cost and proliferation
of hospitals are deterrent factors.

in spite of the cost factor," says Dr Bakthavathsalam.
Patient Friendliness
"A sense of bonding and commitment has been created in the Hospital, where
people volunteer and do their best to satisfy patients by staying back late
and ensuring that no patient returns from the Hospital dissatisfied or not seen
by the doctor concerned," says Dr Bakthavathsalam. Patient managers have
been appointed to ensure patients receive personalised attention and prompt
service from all the doctors, nurses and others.
CSR
The Hospital has launched a programme titled 'Save A Million
Hearts.' Through this programme the Hospital plans to screen around million
people over a period of ten years in its pursuit to combat heart ailments in
the community. The objective of this programme is to create mass awareness about
the cardiac risk factors and heart diseases among the public. It has conducted
over one lakh free eye surgeries for the poorer sections of the community including
5,000 free eye surgeries for poor children, 450 subsidised kidney transplants,
3,000 free dialysis treatments, 150 free heart surgeries for children and 85
free coronary bypass surgeries have been conducted so far.
Long-term Vision
Long-term vision of the Hospital is to set-up a cancer hospital, a hospice for
the terminally ill and a hi-tech trauma care hospital for accident victims.
It also hopes to start a Medical College in the future. The Hospital is exploring
ways and means to diversify the heart Hospital by adding more super specialties
and to introduce stem cell transplantations for more ailments.
